Camp Takajo!!

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Helllooo Camp Takajo!  Our first foray into Maine was INCREDIBLE.  We were introduced to Camp Takajo in Naples, ME by the staff and campers with the warmest of welcomes.  We headed over to the camp the night before the show to check out the grounds and make arrangements for the Camplified event the next day – it’s a good thing as Camp Takajo is definitely off the beaten path.  We were lucky as we got to see the grounds at sunset – and before all the carnival events were set up for the following day.

On show day we arrived early with the sound crew to get the event set up – we arranged for one set before lunch, then the Camplified activities, followed by another set in the afternoon.  The first set opened with Alexa and Natalee Falk and they brought the house down!  I’ve never seen it before, but they did an a cappella version of MJ’s “Black & White” that the boys loooooved.  Next up was Kicking Daisies who got the crowd ready to rock while Loomis & The Lust kept the energy flowing.  The crowd was pumped up….and it wasn’t even lunch time!

After a short break we set up the activities with Rockband using the acoustics of the theatre while Cartoon Network videos and Yu-Gi-Oh! set up next door in a connected building.  Both spaces were gorgeous and it was a good thing – although the Camp Takajo carnival was taking place outside, all of our “stations” were packed!  The day’s musicians joined the campers for some rowdy Rockband “shows” while the Yu-Gi-Oh! experts introduced and trained some excited campers in the art of Konami-goodness.  PLUS (as if that wasn’t enough) the Cartoon Network videos and previews were a huge hit!  The Andrew WK video in particular – the kids went wild!  And, as they made their way outside, the campers picked up their Cartoon Network balls and turned the carnival grounds red with their CN kickballs.  It was pretty crazy!

The campers had a lot of fun with their Cartoon Network balls!

The bands that played am sets also hung out and signed some autographs for some very excited campers!

Then it was time for the second set and 2am Club closed up the night.  2am Club has a unique blend of “funk, pop, rock, blue-eyed soul, hip-hop, new wave, and electro” (I couldn’t describe it if I wanted to, so I’m quoting their MySpace page!) that the kids really responded to.  They put on a really good show and everyone had a great time.

Although we were only in Naples, ME for just over a day we had the best time.  Not only because we were able to bring all of these great activities and music to the campers but also because the campers and staff were so gracious and welcoming to US!  It was a great day for everyone involved in Camplified!

Angel of Music….

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

While at Camp Takajo today (well yesterday) I had the great pleasure of listening to our sound crew play some music during lunch. The two young men were equally talented on vocal and guitar playing; but you may ask “Lisa, what’s your point? You’re on a music tour and that’s what people do.”

True, but it’s worth mentioning because it gave me this amazing and relaxing feeling – before the rest of the day would take off into this fast pace, mind spinning day.

Something about a guitar and a person singing is the most soothing thing in world to me. It can take the events that have occurred in a negative way throughout the course of the day and just simply erase them like it never happened at all and instantly a better day peaks around the corner.

That is the best part about this tour, is being surrounded by so many talented, gifted people, always making the days great days. It was truly hard to pull myself away to go to my booth area for Cartoon Network but I know I will be hearing more throughout the tour.

I simply can not wait!

Deer Mountain Camp gets Camplified!

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Today we joined the campers at Deer Mountain Camp in Suffern, New York.  We were graced with another beautiful day of weather (thank you Powers-That-Be!) and had a lot of fun with the kids.  There was some partying over in the music room with Rock Band, the Yu-Gi-Oh! guys were set up down the trail, and Cartoon Network’s Fall Fusion was a huge hit at the laptop station – and, of course, the HP tablet laptops emitted dozens of “oohs” an “aahs” (that never gets old by the way!).  We had boys and girls of all ages and besides experiencing the activities, they seemed to really enjoy playing around together and with their counselors –and you can’t forget the constant entertainment of the Cartoon Network kick balls!

Jersey Kidz were the performers of the day – and they are such rockstars….

Jersey Kidz focus on the Sound Check. These guys are professionals!

We’ve seen them a few times now and they never cease to impress – constantly breaking out new songs and entertaining the crowds.  Even when the campers are tired and don’t seem too pumped up for the concert, Jersey Kidz only have to be on stage for a few minutes before the entire audience is up and dancing around.  They played a handful of cover songs today – which is unusual for them – but they rocked those just as well as their original tracks.  The kids had a blast!  There were a few little kids (we’re talking liiiitttlllle….maybe 4 years old) who had their own self-started “dance off.”  Let’s just say both the Coffee Grinder and Robot made appearances…it was priceless.  Jersey Kidz bring out the wild side of the campers!!

We rolled out of Suffern, NY with a lot of happy kids waving us goodbye – and the counselors that worked with us all day were incredible.  Thanks Stephanie and Kieran!!  It was really great to be able to get to meet all these guys and work with the kids as they found more and more things that they enjoyed.  Yaaaay Camplified!

Tonya Hurley Brings Ghost Girl to Pierce Camp and Danbee!

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

Author of the book Ghost Girl, Tonya Hurley, was generous enough to come out to Pierce Day Camp and Camp Danbee with Camplified to sign her new book and talk to girls about it.

The girls at both camps were extremely eager to receive their new book. Along with getting their books signed, the girls presented Tonya with many questions about the writing process such as,

“How hard is it writing a book?”

“How long did it take you to write Ghost Girl?”

Along with all of the girl campers, I am extremely excited to read Ghost Girl when I get some down time on tour! We are so happy to have her as a part of Camplified and I cannot wait to see Tonya on her next date. It’s great to see  her get kids excited over new books!

Camp Danbee Camplified Concert Brings the House Down!!!

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

As we rolled into Camp Danbee on Saturday the 18th, I could tell it was going to be one of the best concert dates of this tour!

After a day of Camplified activities, the sound crew finished setting up the stage and sound equipment inside the big indoor soccer field arena; Kicking Daisies opened with so much energy and interaction with the crowd which set the concert on fire!

Camp Danbee was rocking with Kicking Daisies

With any concerts with multiple bands who use their own equipment, there is often some lag between the artists.  When one band finishes and collects their guitars and jumps off stage, the next band needs a few minutes to plug in while the guys at the sound board adjust the levels.  Well, the folks at Cartoon Network were kind enough to help us with some entertainment for the campers during those few minutes of downtime.  With campers excited for the next band, those few minutes could seem like an hour without the right entertainment.  Cartoon Network had some great ideas.

Campers are too enthralled with CN to notice all the moving around on stage. It's the perfect way to keep the energy level up while showing kids something they may love but haven't seen yet. Brilliant!

After Kicking Daisies kicked off the show, Loomis & The Lust graced our stage with great feel good tunes of a Rock/Pop/Blues genre. After rocking out to them we got down with 2am Club’s Rap/Rock feel. But to come and steal the night away was Lansdowne’s closing the set. With energy powered music and sweet jams it was truly a great end to the night.

As the campers headed back to their cabins after a long Camplified-fill day, they stopped by our Scholastic area for some intellectual stimulation.  Helping kids find a new book to love is one of the best parts of my job.

Learning is fun!

Learning is fun! No, seriously. It is.

This tour has been great so far and I can only see it gettin better!

Camp Danbee has the spirit!!

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

From the moment we drove into Camp Danbee, I knew it was going to be a great day!

The first thing we did was eat lunch with the hundreds of spirited Camp Danbee campers. In between bites of food, they were singing and dancing throughout the entire mess hall. It was such a great way to start our day. It made the crew of Camplified and bands feel very welcome, we couldn’t help but sing and dance along with them!

When activities began, the Camp Danbee campers were incredibly eager to participate. Their high spirits started with MTV’s Rockband – these campers were excited!

And all the way down the hill they were getting really into Konami’s Yu-Gi-Oh! They were ready to get their hands into everything Camplified!! Those girls had energy!!!

One of my favorite things about Camp Danbee was the love and enthusiasm that drenched the entire camp. Everyone was always smiling and enjoying each other’s company. This all made it very easy for Camplified to put on one heck of a show.

Danbee girls got all dressed up to rock! Talk about enthusiasm!

Kicking Daisies, Loomis and the Lust, 2am Club and Lansdowne provided an amazing show for an even more fantastic audience!

All in all, Camp Danbee was a blast. It made me really wish that I had had an experience like that when I was younger.

Camplified descends on Peru, MA

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

We had a great time in Peru, Massachusetts today with all the campers at Camp Danbee.  It was the first “resident” camp for this year’s tour and these girls set the bar higggghhhhh!  They were amazing all day – so full of energy and excitement they made the day fly by and each group of campers brought some new ideas and enthusiasm (and camp songs!) to each activity.  It was hard not to get pumped up with them!

I was working with the HP computers and Cartoon Network shorts today.  I had a slew of girls – ranging in ages from 7 to 12 (and even some counselors) who visited the station and took part in the day’s activities.  Even though you go through the games a few times every hour as each camper gears up to try something new, when each girl has such a positive response, it’s so easy to catch the spirit that Camp Danbee is famous for.

It’s pretty interesting to talk to the girls about the programs and hear what they think.  Some thoughts from the girls:

“I like Live Action Drama preview, the show looks funny.  I like how different the people look – especially the goth people.”   – Sage M. (9 years old)

“I watch Total Action Island with my little sister and I’m sure well watch Total Action Drama too.  I like the wacky challenges.” – Jaime R. (11 years old)

Between the video previewing the new show, the Jedi promo and the Andrew W. K. song – these girls had a great time with Computer Network.

Campers enjoy the Cartoon Network goodies

I was also showing them some new tricks with the HP tablet computers.  Although the younger girls liked the transforming effect from the laptop to the tablet, it was the older girls that got really excited about using the machines:

“This computer is really cool.  I really want to get one of these.” – Kirsten J. (20 years old)

“I wanted a touch screen computer a few years ago but could find one so I got a Mac.  My birthday is Aug 7 and now that I’ve played with this one I know that this is what I’ll be getting.  The pen was really easy to use and I loved painting with it.”  Adina B. (11 years old)

It was a great day at the computer station.  The activities were a hit!  We all headed over to the concert later and tonight’s concert was a bonafide rock show.  We had Kicking Daisies, Loomis and the Lust, 2am Club and Lansdowne – these are really great bands!!  The kids and counselors loved it (and the Camplified staff did some serious gushing over the uber talented musicians!).

ROCK SHOW!!

ROCK SHOW!!

It was a great day at Camp Danbee – the kids were all so happy to be there and the staff was a pleasure to work with.  Another super fun Camplified Day.

Pierce Day Camp gets Camplified!

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Greetings from Roslyn, NY!  Camplified descended upon Roslyn today as we brought the rock and entertainment to the crowds at Pierce Day Camp.  The entire day was amazing – from the kind welcome that the camp gave us, to the amazing Rockband turnout and the untraditional early show – the whole event was great.  We’re pretty lucky that we continue to come across these great camps, and Pierce Day Camp was no exception.

The staff and counselors at Pierce are awesome – offering to lend campground wisdom or a helping hand at every opportunity.  Even coming across campers and counselors as we were touring the grounds was a treat!   The Camplified sound crew was hard at work early as they set up the production for the show, while the rest of the Camplified crew got to meet campers and get them acquainted with the Rockband and Cartoon Network treats.   We set up Rockband in the Arcade and the kids were really excited.

Pierce welcomed Rockband into their Arcade for the day. Camplified Staff worked with the musicians (the guys from Jersey Kidz are pictured here) to set up a couple of stations and get the kids started. Once they were going, it was hard to pull them away.

Once in Pierce's arcade, Camplified Staff worked with the musicians (the guys from Jersey Kidz are pictured here) to set up a couple of stations and get the kids started.

Everyone was having a really good time! Get ready to Roooccckkkkk!

Even though their period in the arcade was over, it was hard to drag these guys away. Everyone was having a really good time!

We had kids of all ages rocking out in no time – there’s something about summer camp that seems to bring everyone together and ready to experience new things.  We come across energetic, curious campers all the time – and they’re so enthusiastic about all the info there is to learn.  It’s really awesome to be a part of it!

Everyone ready to rock!

Everyone's ready to rock!

Taylor Bright opened up the concert today, followed by Faces Without Names and then Jersey Kidz was the third band.  Taylor is still pretty young but she is so creative and at home on stage – she had such a good time with the kids and seemed to love them, and they gave the love right back!  Then came Alexa and Natalee from Faces Without Names – those girls are adorable!  I really wanted Alexa’s shoes….so cute!  They played a new song and even “Deadly Beauty” which is the song that Alexa wrote that won the 2007 CosmoGirl songwriting contest – it’s a beautiful song.  Then it was time for the full-band rock of Jersey Kidz.  To get the campers worked into a frenzy, you can always count on Jersey Kidz . Taylor Bright, followed by Alexa and Natalie started the kids dancing and jumping around, and Jersey Kidz rounded out a great concert – the boys and girls were so happy.  All the kids – small and tall – were dancing around like maniacs!  I just wanted to hang out with them and be a camper for the day.

Alas, there was still joy to be spread as the campers played with the Cartoon Network rubber balls and watched a few CN videos – the kids loved watching them.  AND, when it came time for Scholastic books….that was pretty exciting too!  And don’t even get me started on the organic treats from Ian’s…yummmmm.   Seriously.  The kids over at Pierce Day Camp sure know how to have a good time!

tour posters and cartoon network red balls for everyone!

It never ceases to amaze me how beautiful summer camp is, how happy the campers are, and how much fun the musicians have.  Hanging out with happy campers all day is a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.  Ha!  Just another day with Camplified!

See you at Camp Danbee on Saturday – I can’t wait!

A Day in the Park

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009
The sun was shining bright on us yesterday at Day in the Park Camp.

As we pulled into the wide open space, I could tell this was going to be a great day. As we set up the day’s activities, we were greeted with warm smiles and welcomes from the camp staff. They were all willing to lend a helping hand to bring a day of fun and music to the kids.

Once the booths of activities were set up, kids were eager to get started playing Rockband, while the future video game developers were demoing the new online game Fusion Fall by Cartoon Network.

Day In The Park campers were focused on the prize. There are future rockstars among us!

After activities and lunch, it was time for the concert to start.  All three of our musical artists were spectacular with getting the kids out of their seats and onto the stage for some participation. The campers were clapping, swaying and dancing along!  As the Meet and Greet (and autograph session) began, campers were able to come by our Scholastic station and check out some great titles that the publisher passed along for them.

Books!

Books!

The educator in me gets really excited to see the kids so into the Scholastic books. They're captivated by the idea that they actually get to have one. It's great!

Overall this was amazing. I look forward to what the weeks ahead hold because I have a feeling it will only get better. :)

This is what happens when you put six strangers in a van with a lot of swag…

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Since meeting the crew on July 9th, a lot of bonding has happened.

With six strangers comes six different personalities. We all add something to the team and we’re all getting along super! I can tell this summer is going to be one to remember.

Traveling in the 15 passenger van has been a hoot. You’d think that there would be a lot of space with only six bodies, but when you’re traveling with swag from numerous sponsors for hundreds and thousands of campers, it can get pretty tight. I can tell you that we’ve already formed a close bond with the red balls from Cartoon Network…

1300 deflated cartoon network red kickballs with hundreds of scholastic books and tons of ians cookies!

1300 deflated cartoon network red kickballs with hundreds of scholastic books and tons of ians cookies!

That’s the van with the entire back filled with Cartoon Network balls and the back seat filled with Scholastic books and Ian’s cookies for one camp! This is without our crew (& Yu-Gi-Oh! team) or luggage. Aye carumba!

And this is what happens when you open the back doors of the van…

Ashley was brave enough to open the back doors.

Ashley was brave enough to open the back doors.

Good thing we all get a long because we’re living in close counters. It will be interesting when we pick up our Yu-Gi-Oh! team tomorrow and have 9 of us in the van with 9 pieces of luggage. I wonder who will be the first to be strapped to the roof…

Life on the road can be a struggle, but at the end of the day, it is 115% worth it! Couldn’t ask for a better bunch of people to be teamed up with!
