Camplified Featured Author: Jen Calonita

Monday, August 1st, 2011

As promised, we’ll be showcasing a few of our amazing featured authors on this summer’s Camplified tour. Check out the latest Q&A from young adult author, Jen Calonita. This is Jen’s second year participating in Camplified, and we adore having her on board!

Did you attend summer camp when you were younger?
No, but I was a CIT at a summer camp on Long Island. I wanted to work there so desperately that I took the only position they had available — computer counselor. Needless to say, I didn’t get to be outside much.

If so, what was your most memorable experience from camp?
Meeting new people — meeting new guys — I just loved that I could be myself at camp with no expectations. No one knew how I tripped over the word spaghetti in first grade or about the mouth of metal I sported in seventh or eighth or the horrible crush I had on the senior that ignored me — I was just Jen Calonita and I could be anyone I wanted to be at camp.

If you were to attend summer camp right now, what three items would you not leave home without?
My iPhone — games, email, my link to the outside world! A huge stack of books and my camera. I never leave home without that! I’m a huge scrapbooker.

What is your favorite aspect of the Camplified Tour experience?
The campers are incredible. They’re always so thankful we’ve visiting, meanwhile, I’m just thankful they let me! I love talking to campers about what is going on in their world — especially since I write books about sleepaway camp.

How would you describe CAMPLIFIED in five words or less?
Electric, mesmerizing, exuberant, spectacular and one-of-a-kind (does that count as one word???)

What advice do you have for aspiring young adult authors?
Read and write as much as you can. And keep journals and store them somewhere safe! I so wish I still had mine to look back at for inspiration.

Guest Blog: Author Jen Calonita

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Camplified 2010 sponsor Little, Brown Books brought Secrets of My Hollywood Life author Jen Calonita to select camps this summer as part of our 2010 tour. We got Jen to dish about all things summer camp right here on our Camplified blog!

God, I miss camp.

That was the first thought that entered my mind when I drove up to Ivy League Summer Camp for my first-ever Camplified experience. Camp was just how I remembered it — green and leafy, wet and wild (I was dying to take a dip in the pool) and hilarious. (The day I visited was pop culture day and the counselors all seemed to be dressed up as different versions of Lady Gaga.) Oh yeah, camp was also hot and sticky, but you know what? No one seemed to care. That’s the beauty about camp — your makeup has melted off hours ago, your hair is a giant puff ball, you usually have to wear a way-too-big camp tee that is totally not flattering, and yet everyone looks happy. I was that Friday and all I was just a guest! I’m making a few Camplified visits this summer to talk about being an author and to give away copies of my new book, REALITY CHECK. I also chatted with campers about the book I wrote about camp, Sleepaway Girls. See how influential being a camp counselor was for me when I was 17? I wrote a teen novel about it! My next Camplified visit is this August and I’m already dreaming of my day at camp. This time if the temperature is over 90 degrees, I’m bringing my swimsuit. –Jen

NOW ANNOUNCING THE CAMPLIFIED 2010 TOUR

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

With Atlantic Recording Artist Cody Simpson

Entering Its Ninth Season On The Road, The Camplified Tour Will Be Playing In Front Of
More Than 30,000 Teens And Tweens At Over 30 Different Summer Camps Across The Nation

NEW YORK, NY — Ready to embark on its ninth summer tour, Camplified is set to rock teens and tweens at over 30 camps across the United States, July 5 through August 13. Each tour stop features a host of talented musicians and bands, along with a broad spectrum of some of today’s hottest brands and corporate sponsors. The result is a true VIP concert experience, complete with meet and greets, contests, giveaways and more.

The brainchild of music executive Aimee Berger, Camplified originated in 2001 when Berger, frustrated by the lack of finances devoted to artist development within the record industry, created a grassroots marketing effort that could benefit more than just emerging musicians. Berger partnered with Primary Wave Music in 2008 to expand the Camplified experience with corporate sponsors, as well as create a broad digital community at Camplified.com where campers, bands and brands are able to interact and stay in touch long after summer camp ends.

The 2010 music schedule for Camplified highlights an array of talented up-and-comers, including new Atlantic recording artist Cody Simpson. With nearly 6 million views on YouTube, Simpson recently released his first single, “iYiYi,” featuring Flo Rida. This will be his first public tour. “I am so excited to go on my first-ever tour,” enthuses Simpson. “Having the opportunity to perform live is something I’ve been dreaming about since I first started playing guitar and singing.” (more…)
