Camp Takajo!!

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Helllooo Camp Takajo!  Our first foray into Maine was INCREDIBLE.  We were introduced to Camp Takajo in Naples, ME by the staff and campers with the warmest of welcomes.  We headed over to the camp the night before the show to check out the grounds and make arrangements for the Camplified event the next day – it’s a good thing as Camp Takajo is definitely off the beaten path.  We were lucky as we got to see the grounds at sunset – and before all the carnival events were set up for the following day.

On show day we arrived early with the sound crew to get the event set up – we arranged for one set before lunch, then the Camplified activities, followed by another set in the afternoon.  The first set opened with Alexa and Natalee Falk and they brought the house down!  I’ve never seen it before, but they did an a cappella version of MJ’s “Black & White” that the boys loooooved.  Next up was Kicking Daisies who got the crowd ready to rock while Loomis & The Lust kept the energy flowing.  The crowd was pumped up….and it wasn’t even lunch time!

After a short break we set up the activities with Rockband using the acoustics of the theatre while Cartoon Network videos and Yu-Gi-Oh! set up next door in a connected building.  Both spaces were gorgeous and it was a good thing – although the Camp Takajo carnival was taking place outside, all of our “stations” were packed!  The day’s musicians joined the campers for some rowdy Rockband “shows” while the Yu-Gi-Oh! experts introduced and trained some excited campers in the art of Konami-goodness.  PLUS (as if that wasn’t enough) the Cartoon Network videos and previews were a huge hit!  The Andrew WK video in particular – the kids went wild!  And, as they made their way outside, the campers picked up their Cartoon Network balls and turned the carnival grounds red with their CN kickballs.  It was pretty crazy!

The campers had a lot of fun with their Cartoon Network balls!

The bands that played am sets also hung out and signed some autographs for some very excited campers!

Then it was time for the second set and 2am Club closed up the night.  2am Club has a unique blend of “funk, pop, rock, blue-eyed soul, hip-hop, new wave, and electro” (I couldn’t describe it if I wanted to, so I’m quoting their MySpace page!) that the kids really responded to.  They put on a really good show and everyone had a great time.

Although we were only in Naples, ME for just over a day we had the best time.  Not only because we were able to bring all of these great activities and music to the campers but also because the campers and staff were so gracious and welcoming to US!  It was a great day for everyone involved in Camplified!

Camp Danbee Camplified Concert Brings the House Down!!!

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

As we rolled into Camp Danbee on Saturday the 18th, I could tell it was going to be one of the best concert dates of this tour!

After a day of Camplified activities, the sound crew finished setting up the stage and sound equipment inside the big indoor soccer field arena; Kicking Daisies opened with so much energy and interaction with the crowd which set the concert on fire!

With any concerts with multiple bands who use their own equipment, there is often some lag between the artists.  When one band finishes and collects their guitars and jumps off stage, the next band needs a few minutes to plug in while the guys at the sound board adjust the levels.  Well, the folks at Cartoon Network were kind enough to help us with some entertainment for the campers during those few minutes of downtime.  With campers excited for the next band, those few minutes could seem like an hour without the right entertainment.  Cartoon Network had some great ideas.

Campers are too enthralled with CN to notice all the moving around on stage. It's the perfect way to keep the energy level up while showing kids something they may love but haven't seen yet. Brilliant!

After Kicking Daisies kicked off the show, Loomis & The Lust graced our stage with great feel good tunes of a Rock/Pop/Blues genre. After rocking out to them we got down with 2am Club’s Rap/Rock feel. But to come and steal the night away was Lansdowne’s closing the set. With energy powered music and sweet jams it was truly a great end to the night.

As the campers headed back to their cabins after a long Camplified-fill day, they stopped by our Scholastic area for some intellectual stimulation.  Helping kids find a new book to love is one of the best parts of my job.

Learning is fun!

Learning is fun! No, seriously. It is.

This tour has been great so far and I can only see it gettin better!

Camp Danbee has the spirit!!

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

From the moment we drove into Camp Danbee, I knew it was going to be a great day!

The first thing we did was eat lunch with the hundreds of spirited Camp Danbee campers. In between bites of food, they were singing and dancing throughout the entire mess hall. It was such a great way to start our day. It made the crew of Camplified and bands feel very welcome, we couldn’t help but sing and dance along with them!

When activities began, the Camp Danbee campers were incredibly eager to participate. Their high spirits started with MTV’s Rockband – these campers were excited!

And all the way down the hill they were getting really into Konami’s Yu-Gi-Oh! They were ready to get their hands into everything Camplified!! Those girls had energy!!!

One of my favorite things about Camp Danbee was the love and enthusiasm that drenched the entire camp. Everyone was always smiling and enjoying each other’s company. This all made it very easy for Camplified to put on one heck of a show.

Danbee girls got all dressed up to rock! Talk about enthusiasm!

Kicking Daisies, Loomis and the Lust, 2am Club and Lansdowne provided an amazing show for an even more fantastic audience!

All in all, Camp Danbee was a blast. It made me really wish that I had had an experience like that when I was younger.

Camplified descends on Peru, MA

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

We had a great time in Peru, Massachusetts today with all the campers at Camp Danbee.  It was the first “resident” camp for this year’s tour and these girls set the bar higggghhhhh!  They were amazing all day – so full of energy and excitement they made the day fly by and each group of campers brought some new ideas and enthusiasm (and camp songs!) to each activity.  It was hard not to get pumped up with them!

I was working with the HP computers and Cartoon Network shorts today.  I had a slew of girls – ranging in ages from 7 to 12 (and even some counselors) who visited the station and took part in the day’s activities.  Even though you go through the games a few times every hour as each camper gears up to try something new, when each girl has such a positive response, it’s so easy to catch the spirit that Camp Danbee is famous for.

It’s pretty interesting to talk to the girls about the programs and hear what they think.  Some thoughts from the girls:

“I like Live Action Drama preview, the show looks funny.  I like how different the people look – especially the goth people.”   – Sage M. (9 years old)

“I watch Total Action Island with my little sister and I’m sure well watch Total Action Drama too.  I like the wacky challenges.” – Jaime R. (11 years old)

Between the video previewing the new show, the Jedi promo and the Andrew W. K. song – these girls had a great time with Computer Network.

I was also showing them some new tricks with the HP tablet computers.  Although the younger girls liked the transforming effect from the laptop to the tablet, it was the older girls that got really excited about using the machines:

“This computer is really cool.  I really want to get one of these.” – Kirsten J. (20 years old)

“I wanted a touch screen computer a few years ago but could find one so I got a Mac.  My birthday is Aug 7 and now that I’ve played with this one I know that this is what I’ll be getting.  The pen was really easy to use and I loved painting with it.”  Adina B. (11 years old)

It was a great day at the computer station.  The activities were a hit!  We all headed over to the concert later and tonight’s concert was a bonafide rock show.  We had Kicking Daisies, Loomis and the Lust, 2am Club and Lansdowne – these are really great bands!!  The kids and counselors loved it (and the Camplified staff did some serious gushing over the uber talented musicians!).

ROCK SHOW!!

ROCK SHOW!!

It was a great day at Camp Danbee – the kids were all so happy to be there and the staff was a pleasure to work with.  Another super fun Camplified Day.
